Yesterday's quiz was the chart of musician Alanis Morissette,
a popular female vocalist.
This was not an easy quiz because there were reasons to choose
any one of the four careers listed. In Alanis's chart it's quite
obvious that Venus plays a prominent role in her career, being
the only planet located in the 10th house of career. But Venus
can represent so many things like fashion designer, musician,
massage therapist, or real estate agent as the 4th lord. It's
easy to see how challenging it can be to interpret a chart correctly,
particularly the individual's profession. So let's look deeper.
Alanis Morissette's Natal Chart
In addition to Venus in the 10th house, Venus also aspects her
Moon to the exact degree, with the Moon being the ruler of her
ascendant. In my article, The
Importance of the Lagna to Determine Career, I emphasize
to first analyze the influences on the ascendant (lagna) and
ascendant lord, before looking at the 10th house. The lagna
is the foundation of the chart, and reveals the main character
traits which will effect every area of their lives. In Alanis's
case Venus, the karaka (significator) of music and creativity,
and Mars, the 5th lord of creativity, both aspect the Moon quite
closely. In addition, Jupiter the 9th lord (5th from the 5th)
also aspects the Moon, while Mars, the 5th lord, is also located
in the lagna. This repeated pattern shows that we're dealing
with a very creative person.
K.N. Rao calls the benefic planets artistic planets, and the
malefic planets technical planets. In Alanis's case, the Moon,
Venus, and Jupiter have a combined influence on the lagna lord
confirming that this is an artistic person. When looking from
chandra lagna (Moon ascendant) the Moon becomes the 10th lord
aspected by both Venus, the lagna lord, and Jupiter, the 3rd
lord of the fine arts, like music. From both the ascendant and
the Moon, the tight Venus-Moon opposition forms a raja yoga.
From the ascendant the raja yoga is between the 1st and 4th
lords, and from the Moon it's between the 1st and 10th lords.
Mars, the yogakaraka planet as the 5th and 10th lord for Cancer
lagna, is debilitated in Cancer. However, this debility is cancelled
due to Mars being located on an angle from the lagna and the
Moon. Mars in the lagna shows that she's ambitious, and courageous.
She's know for her bold and original lyrics and style of music.
But she's also known for writing very personal lyrics about
her relationships or her own psychological insights, which is
shown by Moon-Venus connection who are personable and intimate
planets. The Moon and the 4th house represent psychology. The
Moon rules her ascendant (the 4th sign) and is placed in the
4th house, with the 4th lord Venus in the visible 10th house.
You could say that she wears her heart on her sleeve for the
whole world to see. This is a main reason that she has such
a devoted fan base.
At age 21, Alanis produced her first official album, Jagged
Little Pill, that became the 3rd best selling female album
of all time, selling 28 million copies worldwide. This was her
Jupiter-Mercury dasha from June 1995 - October 1997. Notice
how Jupiter aspects Mercury, which activates their connection
between the benefic 9th lord, representing fortunes, and the
3rd lord representing the performing arts. This 9th and 3rd
house connection repeats from chandra lagna as well. However,
you might think, "But Mercury's the 12th lord in the 12th
house and doesn't form any dana yogas." She became successful
in a foreign country, which the 12th house represents. In her
Jupiter-Saturn dasha, in 1993, she moved to Los Angeles from
Canada to make it big in the US. It took her two years to do
so, but it didn't happen until she began her Mercury sub period
in 1995. Notice how Mercury becomes the 9th lord in the 9th
house from the Moon, conjunct the 4th and 5th lord and yogakaraka
Saturn. This powerful yoga repeats from the dasha lagna Jupiter,
with Mercury becoming the 5th lord in the 5th house conjunct
the 1st lord Saturn and aspected by Jupiter the 2nd and 11th
lord. The combined analysis of her chart from the lagna, chandra
lagna, and the dasha lagna reveals the success of her Jupiter-Mercury
dasha.
However, during her Mercury sub dasha she also became disillusioned
with the whole music industry scene and retreated to India for
6 weeks for spiritual solace. Notice how Mercury is in the 12th
house, aspected by Jupiter the 9th lord. This shows how much
travel to foreign countries she did in this dasha for concert
tours, but it also shows her spiritual longing as well. It wasn't
till after her Ketu sub dasha was over, and she started her
Venus sub dasha, that she re-emerged back on the music scene
with her 2nd album. Her most popular song on this album was
Thank U in which she again shares her bold and vulnerable
psychological and spiritual insights. This time they're the
one's she gained from her time in India. The chorus begins with
Thank You India.
How about getting off of these antibiotics?
How about stopping eating when I'm filled up?
How about them transparent dangling carrots?
How about that ever elusive kudo?
Thank you India
Thank you terror
Thank you disillusionment
Thank you frailty
Thank you consequence
Thank you thank you silence
How about me not blaming you for everything?
How about me enjoying the moment for once?
How about how good it feels to finally forgive you?
How about grieving it all one at a time?
Thank you India
Thank you terror
Thank you disillusionment
Thank you frailty
Thank you consequence
Thank you thank you silence
The moment I let go of it was
The moment I got more than I could handle
The moment I jumped off of it was
The moment I touched down
How about no longer being masochistic?
How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?
Thank you India
Thank you providence
Thank you disillusionment
Thank you nothingness
Thank you clarity
Thank you thank you silence
