Here are two quotes from K.N. Rao's book, Timing Events Through Vimshottari Dasha, which give clues about periods of rise in career.

"Now remember three principles: the major or sub periods of the lagna lord or the 10th lord, like the periods of exalted planets are favorable (for career rise)."

"The 7th house has been described as the place of pada prapti, the position giver." (It is the 10th house from the 10th house).

Using the following chart, Rao illustrates how the dasha of Rahu/Mercury brought a high position in the individuals career. Notice how Rahu and Mercury are both located in the 11th house of gains, and recognition. Mercury, the 7th and 10th lord, is involved in a dharma karma raja yoga (combination of the 9th and 10th lords) with the 9th lord Sun. Mercury is also 10th lord from the Moon.
