When people think of Saturn they often think of a strict task
master who makes your life miserable by forcing you to suffer
endlessly. If there's ever a planet to blame for our hardships
it's Saturn, or so many people think. That's one perspective.
Here's another:
Saturn represents the hard work that it takes to manifest anything
worthwhile in the world. When we think of creativity we first
think of Venus, the planet of art and beauty. However, Saturn
is another aspect of creativity - the sweat that rolls off the
artists forehead while concentrating on their work. Without
Saturn nothing of significance can be created. This is because
it takes discipline, commitment, and focus - all qualities of
Saturn.
Saturn represents the perseverance to see a creative project
through from conception to completion.
Last evening my wife and I went to a birthing class to help
us prepare for the birth of our son in early February. We had
a discussion about labor and contractions - topics not too surprising
for a birthing class! I thought how interesting it is that Saturn
is described as the planet of physical labor as well as contraction.
You can just look at Saturn's rings and sense its tight, contractive
quality. We talked about how the muscles of the woman's uterus
involuntarily contract repeatedly in order to push the baby
through the birth canal. Without the contractions the birth
cannot take place. It's usually a painful process with each
contraction getting more severe as the baby gets nearer to birth.
Saturn's contractive principle
is the concentration and focus to stay with the process even
if it's painful. While creating anything worthwhile we inevitably
confront difficult moments when we just want to give up. Saturn
is the push that takes us through to completion, which is why
it's a necessary ingredient in any creative process.
