Navigating By The Stars
Namaste Friends,
This article is so far the favorite article that I've written (it took the longest to write as well. embarrassingly long - so I won't tell you how many hours!) because it discusses how astrology can help us navigate our life journey, and align with our dharma or life purpose. It will appear this fall in Zento magazine. To learn more about this publication please visit www.zentomag.com

Ever considered following a star? Many ancient cultures relied on the stars to chart their destinies. Polynesian navigators discovered the Hawai'ian Islands more than 1500 years ago by primarily following Arcturus or "Hokule'a" - the star of happiness. They followed a 'star map' to accomplish the amazing feat of voyaging thousands of miles in small double-hulled canoes.

Astrologers in India have used a different kind of 'star map' for more than 4000 years to navigate the less tangible terrain of one's life journey. Their sophisticated system of astrology is renowned for its accuracy in charting planetary influences on time. The Polynesian system of star navigation, on the other hand, is renowned for its precision in charting influences on space. Whether navigating the turbulent seas or the complexities of our personal lives, these ancient traditions have much to teach us about living in harmony with life and staying on course with our purpose.

The Double Transit of Jupiter and Saturn
This month both Jupiter and Saturn will be changing signs into Virgo and Cancer respectively. An important chart interpretation method is to see which houses in your chart are aspected by both Jupiter and Saturn by transit at any given time. These houses will become emphasized as well as the planets that they both aspect. This is called the double transit phenomenon.

From Aug 28th 2004 through Sept 28th 2005 the houses that Virgo and Capricorn represent in your chart will receive the double aspect of Jupiter and Saturn. However, from January 14th 2005 through May 27th 2005 Saturn will transit back into Gemini shifting the double transit to into only Pisces for those 5 1/2 months.

Here's a brief list of indications for the houses so you can get an idea of how the doubel transit may be influencing your chart:

1st house - Body, one's identity, self-confidence, overall success.
2nd house - Earned income, acquisitions, food/diet, speech.
3rd house - Communication, advertising, hobbies, writing, siblings, short journeys, short-term goals.
4th house - Home/residence, real estate, mother, vehicles, general happiness.
5th house - Creativity, children, romance/dating, investments, education.
6th house - Health, disease, acute illness, daily work, litigation, debts.
7th house - Relationship, marriage, partnerships - business or romantic, foreign places.
8th house - Other's money - loans, inheritance; litigation, chronic illness, sexuality, transformation, occult knowledge.
9th house - Long distance travel, spiritual teaching and teachers, good fortune, father.
10th house - Career, employer, work/action, outer achievements.
11th house - Monetary gains, side incomes, major long-term goals, groups, friends.
12th house - Distant places, introspection, debts and expenditures, isolation.

Thirunallar: Saturn Temple in South India
Not less than 200,000 pilgrims visit a small temple to the planet Saturn every Saturday (Saturn day) in Thiruvanallar, South India. Hard to believe? It's been going on for hundreds of years.

Devotees from all over the world seeking the blessings of Saturn (Shani) will also visit the shrine during Sani Peyarchi, an astrological event when Saturn moves from one planetary position to another every two and a half years. This will be happening this month as Saturn transits into Cancer September 5th.

The central government is currently studying the possibility of promoting this small temple town where there is a shrine of Lord Saneeswarar (Saturn), as a heritage site.
