Namaste Friends,
It's often our habit to make assumptions. We think we perceive something correctly, but we may be off in left field and not even know it. This is a serious problem in the practice of astrology. We take a first glance at a chart and think we have it all wrapped up neatly.
Recently I had a dramatic lesson about this. My fiancee and I were going on a drive in a beautiful part of Maui, Hawaii where we live. I noticed that some of the mango trees looked sickly with patches of leaves that had turned brown and were drooping, like in the photo to the right. Whole hillsides were turning brown, or so it seemed.
My mind started reeling off assumptions: "It's an infestation of nasty insects," "See, real evidence of global warming!" "Isn't anyone going to do something about this?" We were passing some of the most pristine natural scenery with bamboo forests and waterfalls and I was depressed because of the poor sick mango trees. When we got to the ranger station in Kipahulu, the rangers just laughed when I asked about them. "Those are just the new mango leaves! They always look like that this time of year!"
There is tremendous wisdom in the attitude of not-knowing, and remaining curious. Once we decide we know the answer we stop being open to learning the real truth. A Zen quote says, "To know that you don't know is true wisdom. Thinking you know when you don't is the major obstacle to realizing truth."
When first analyzing a chart I find that it's helpful to keep the attitude of "maybe." Maybe it is, maybe it's not. To really know for sure we need to work hard on the chart and collect many clues that support our assumptions.

This month's Astro-Profile article is entitled Debilitated Planets and the Great Parashara Exception and is an in-depth look at the often confusing issue of debilitated planets. Are they really the weakest planets in the chart? Apparently not, since so many great celebrities have them.
Demi Moore is a great example of debilitated planets that give the reverse results. Her Mars, for instance, is debiliated in the sign of Cancer, in the 6th house and aspected by the malefic planets, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. When you apply the principles of neecha banga raja yogas and 'the great Parashara exception,' you'll see that Mars has the power to give the reverse results. In fact, she achieved great fame in her Mars-Rahu dasha.
This Astro-Profile discusses Demi's chart in depth and also analyzes the charts of actor Al Pacino, supermodel Claudio Schiffer, former president Ronald Reagan, and artist Pablo Picasso. By reading this article you will learn how to accurately interpret debilitated planets. You will also learn how to verify the accuracy of the birth time using key events, along with the dashas, transits, and the vargas or divisional charts.

Coming up on September 22nd there will be an annular solar eclipse, not a total eclipse. It will be viewable in North America, but will be viewable in Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, the South Atlantic Ocean, and ends southwest of the Kerguelen Islands.
The eclipse will at 5 degrees Virgo. If this is within 10 degrees of your ascendant, Sun or Moon, or other planets then it could represent a major shift or transition in your life relative to the house and/or the planets that are involved. This is especially true when the dashas and other major transits like Jupiter and/or Saturn also indicate this dramatic change.
It's always best to do spiritual practices during eclipses and not anything of significance in the material world like starting a major project or signing important documents. Eclipses are excellent times for meditation, chanting mantras, or other spiritual practices. It's recommended to fast. Traditionally in India Brahmans (priests) will do spiritual practices like chanting mantras while submerged up to the neck in a body of water like a sacred river during the final hours of the eclipse. It is believed that any spiritual practices done during the eclipse will be many times more powerful and effective than at other times.
